SUMMARY:Minnesota Solar Challenge Workshops
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to attend one of five free events to learn about   solar energy best practices in planning\, zoning\, and permitting\, as well as   the free assistance available through the Minnesota Solar Challenge for   implementing them.  See dates & locations >>  \nMany   communities agree that renewable energy is important for the future. But has   your community really assessed its local renewable energy resources? Is solar   energy addressed in your comprehensive plan\, your development regulation\, and   your economic development priorities? What standards does your community use   to balance                                                                          between productive   renewable energy resources and protecting community character? What is “distributed   generation” and why should planners and building officials care? \n  \nEvery   community has a solar energy resource. Solar installation costs are rapidly   coming down\, and solar energy systems are coming soon to your community. But   most local governments have little experience with renewable energy from a   land use or economic development perspective. This workshop will review the   rapidly evolving world of community-scale solar energy markets\, technologies\,   and regulation\, with a special emphasis on addressing renewable energy   resources in plans\, development regulation\, and building code permitting. \n  \nThese workshops will address: \n\nMarket trends in solar energy and solar energy        technologies\nThe hows and whys of addressing solar resources in local        plans and policies\nThe different technologies for harvesting local renewable        energy and how different technologies can create different        considerations in development regulation and permitting requirements\nSteps for local governments to encourage the development        of a local solar energy market by removing barriers and limiting        uncertainty\nWhat potential conflicts might arise from solar energy        installations\, and distinguishing between real and perceived nuisances\nOpportunities for local renewable energy incentives to        meet your sustainability\, economic development\, or energy independence        goals\n\nWho   should attend? Elected and   appointed officials\, planners and zoning administrators\, building and   inspections administrators\, sustainability staff \n  \nCost: Free! \nDates\, Times &   Locations: \n  \n Rochester Workshop  \nThursday\, November 29\, 2012: 12:30-4:00pm \nRSVP   now >> \n  \n Statewide Webinar  \nWednesday\, December 5\, 2012: 9:00-10:30am \nRSVP now >> \n  \n Brainerd Workshop  \nWednesday\, December 12\, 2012: 12:30-4:00pm \nRSVP   now >> \n  \n Duluth Workshop  \nTuesday\, January 15\, 2013: 12:30-4:00pm \nRSVP   now >> \n  \n Saint Paul Workshop  \nWednesday\, February 6\, 2013: 12:30-4:00pm \nRSVP   now >> \n  \n \n\n\n\nTo learn   more\, visit http://mncerts.org/solarchallenge \n\n\n\nWhat   is the Minnesota Solar Challenge? The   Minnesota Solar Challenge provides support for communities across Minnesota   that may be interested in capturing the benefit of their local solar   energy resource. SUMMARY:Association of MN Counties Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Each December for over 100 years\, the Association of Minnesota Counties’ (AMC) Annual Conference is where more than 600 county elected officials\, department heads\, and staff\, come together to learn and discuss the important topics and trends affecting county government. Minnesota’s 87 counties have a long tradition of finding better ways to deliver services\, perform more efficiently\, and improve overall service to their constituents. There are a variety of challenges and opportunities currently facing counties\, and continuing to learn new or improved ways to work is more important now than ever before. This year’s conference schedule has been significantly revamped and the length of the conference shortened. The biggest change to this year’s conference is that we will be ending the conference on Tuesday afternoon following the AMC Business Meeting. In order to give attendees a wide variety of subjects to learn more about\, our workshop schedule offers 30 one-hour workshops on a wide variety of topics over two days. There is literally something for everyone and then some! The Opening Session Monday morning features keynote speaker St. John’s University Football Coach John Gagliardi\, the winningest coach in college football history! Now in his 60th season as head coach of the Johnnies\, Gagliardi’s success is attributable to more than just football strategy and tactics. He creates an environment of fun and high expectations and he concentrates on methods and practices that truly focus on winning football games. In short\, Gagliardi’s approach is one of concentration at the critical point and flawless execution. It is accomplished through a practice regimen that is purposeful — emphasizing repetition and fundamentals. The Awards Banquet Monday night provides an opportunity to publicly recognize counties and individuals for outstanding achievements in government. Nomination forms are available at \n  \nwww.mncounties.org. Deadline: October 14. The St. John’s University Boys’ Choir will perform Monday night at the end of the awards banquet. Now in its 31st season\, The St. John’s Boys’ Choir continues the tradition of enabling boys to express themselves through music\, and provides an environment that nurtures and encourages creativity. Members of The St. John’s Boys’ Choir represent home\, public\, and private schools in more than 15 communities around Central Minnesota. You can learn more at www.sjbchoir.org. AMC’s Business Meeting has moved to Tuesday afternoon at the conclusion of the conference. This important part of the conference is where input from all county delegates is encouraged as we vote on our legislative platform and elect AMC officers for the coming year. The conference will end following the election of AMC’s 2013 officers and the final Grand Prize drawing so you can get on the road by late afternoon

What standards does your community use   to balance                                                                          between productive   renewable energy resources and protecting community character? What is   “distributed generation” and why should planners and building officials care?Every   community has a solar energy resource. Minnesota Solar Challenge partners will work with   communities across Minnesota until February 2013 to implement local   government best practices in permitting and zoning. The project   aims to create a mature solar energy industry and create opportunities   for homeowners and businesses to more effectively use their solar energy   resource.Who’s behind this effort? The   local government team working on the Minnesota Solar Challenge is comprised   of the Minnesota Renewable Energy Society\, CR Planning\, Clean Energy   Resource Teams\, Minnesota Department of Commerce\, League of Minnesota   Cities\, and Metropolitan Council\, among others. The Minnesota Solar Challenge   is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy and the   Minnesota Department of Commerce\, Division of Energy Resources.
